St. Vincent and the Grenadines is an archipelago of 32 islands and cays located in the eastern Caribbean between St. Lucia 24 miles north and Grenada 75 miles to the south. St.Vincent, Young Island Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau, Union Island, Palm Island and Petit St. Vincent are the only inhabited islands and range in size from .2 sq miles to 133 sq miles. The Tobago Cays, a group of five uninhabited islands surrounded by a horseshoe reef, is a protected marine park and home to an abundance of sea turtles.
English is the official language in St.Vincent and the Grenadines and the average daytime temperatures range from 24°C/75°F to 30°C/87°F. The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$) which is pegged to the US dollar at a cash rate of $2.67 for 1$ US. A democratically elected government and Prime Minister have obtained since the attainment of Independence from Great Britain on October 27th, 1979.
The main island St.Vincent is a volcanic one with mainly black sand beaches on both the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts, while the southern tip of the islands offers golden sandy beaches. Young Island, 200 yards off St.Vincent, and the Grenadine islands all boast white sand beaches making St. Vincent and the Grenadines a unique destination.
Mainland St.Vincent has a mountainous topography with La Soufriere volcano rising 4,048ft at the Northern end of the island and is home to the oldest Botanical Gardens in the Western hemisphere. Nine Mornings is a unique Vincentian festivity which takes place on the nine mornings before Christmas. People awake in the early hours of the morning and partake in activities like sea bathing, dances, bicycle riding, concerts, and other fun competitions.
