A 24-year-old Frenchman is circumnavigating the world in his 36-foot sailboat—an amazing feat in itself—but what truly makes this story out of this world is his partner in exploration: a pet chicken named Monique. She has been touring the world with him ever since he received her as a gift during his stay on the Canary Islands.
As silly (and cool) as that may sound, people have been traveling, and sailing, the world with animals and pets for millennia. Though dogs and other more standard pets are more often seen as suitable travel companions, Guirec Soudée is showing that any animal can play that role.
Monique and Guirec have already traveled across the Atlantic and made a pit-stop in Greenland. And that’s only the beginning! Their adventure is far from over.
Guirec has (unsurprisingly) acquired quite the social media following and goes to great lengths to keep his fans across the world updated on the adventures he’s having with his seafaring chicken. Some of those fans have even met him and Monique as his boat, named Yvinec after his hometown, has docked in their countries.
When not busy piloting the boat, Monique enjoys surfing, catching fish, sledding, and skateboarding. She also lays an egg almost every day! Videos of her doing all kinds of things can be found on Guirec’s website and social media. Everyone needs to see a chicken sled. Everyone.
Here are some gorgeous shots from Guirec’s Instagram to give you a sense of his grand adventure.
If there’s anything to be learned from Guirec’s journey, it’s that absolutely anything is possible if you set your mind to it. You can achieve whatever your dreams maybe, whether travel-related or not. You also need a pet chicken. Preferably right now.
