GUIDE: Tamp Bay a Dynamic Blend of Culture, Cuisine, and Innovation

FLORIDA SERIES – Fifth and final stop! I only had two days to explore this amazing city, but I made every moment count. I can’t wait to come back soon with my family!

Tampa Bay is a city that embodies the best of Florida’s diverse culture, modern innovation, and vibrant community spirit. The region, home to a population of over 3 million, offers an exciting mix of attractions, from thrilling theme parks and world-class aquariums to historic districts and award-winning restaurants. Tampa Bay’s unique blend of Latin American influences, Florida Cracker culture, and the rich heritage of Cuban, Spanish, German, and Italian immigrants has shaped the city into a thriving hub of culture and cuisine. With a booming infrastructure supported by significant investments, including over $5 billion from Bill Gates, Tampa Bay is rapidly evolving into a premier destination that seamlessly combines urban adventures with natural beauty.

EAT: A Culinary Adventure in Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay’s food scene is a reflection of its diverse cultural influences, offering a wide range of culinary experiences that cater to every palate. My culinary journey began at Psomi, a Greek-inspired restaurant owned and operated by Chef Christina Theofilos. Psomi is rooted in traditional Greek values but is influenced by flavors from around the world. The restaurant’s focus on fresh ingredients, warm hospitality, and traditional recipes with a modern twist made for a delightful dining experience that felt both familiar and new.

One of the highlights of my trip was dining at the legendary Bern’s Steak House. From the outside, Bern’s may appear unassuming, but inside, it’s the epitome of luxury and fine dining. Established in 1956 by Bern Laxer, the restaurant is renowned for its exceptional steaks, extensive wine list, and the Harry Waugh Dessert Room. The dessert room, complete with live piano music and a unique system for making song requests via phone, offers a truly memorable experience. I also had the chance to tour Bern’s extensive wine cellar, which houses over 500,000 bottles on-site and another 750,000 in a nearby warehouse. As someone deeply involved in the wine community, I was blown away by the sheer scale and meticulous organization of this private collection, making Bern’s a must-visit for any wine enthusiast.

Another notable dining experience was at Predalina, a restaurant that combines exceptional cuisine with a unique retail experience. Located in the heart of Tampa’s new Water Street district, Predalina offers a menu of fresh, seasonal dishes alongside a carefully curated selection of handcrafted wares, home décor, and gifts. The restaurant’s concept of allowing guests to take home the table-side wares and ingredients used in their meals adds a personal touch to the dining experience, making it both memorable and unique.

For breakfast, I visited Goody Goody, an iconic Tampa brand located in Hyde Park Village. This all-day diner is known for its hearty breakfast options, burgers, sandwiches, and famous pies. Owned by the 1905 Family of Restaurants, Goody Goody offers a nostalgic dining experience that harkens back to simpler times, with classic American dishes served in a warm and welcoming setting.

On my final night in Tampa Bay, I enjoyed dinner at Counter Culture, a modern restaurant that pays homage to classic counter dining. Chef Pierola’s innovative menu features elevated small plates and vibrant cocktails, served in a setting that combines open-air dining with views of Tampa Bay. The restaurant’s focus on fresh, local ingredients and creative culinary techniques made for an exceptional dining experience that was both satisfying and sophisticated.

PLAY: Enjoy this Walkable City

Tampa Bay is home to some of Florida’s most popular attractions, making it a great destination for travelers of all ages. During my stay, I explored several of the city’s must-see spots, starting with the Tampa Bay History Center. This Smithsonian-affiliated museum offers a comprehensive look at the region’s past, from the indigenous cultures that first inhabited the area to the Cuban cigar manufacturers who built Ybor City. The museum’s interactive exhibits and extensive artifact collections make it a fascinating place to learn about the history that has shaped Tampa into the vibrant city it is today.

Another great way to experience Tampa Bay is by exploring the Tampa Riverwalk. This scenic 2.6-mile path along the Hillsborough River connects many of the city’s top attractions, including the Tampa Museum of Art, the Florida Aquarium, and the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. The Riverwalk is a great place to take a leisurely stroll, enjoy public art installations, and soak in the beauty of the waterfront.

For a taste of Tampa’s vibrant nightlife, I visited Beacon, located on the 27th floor of the JW Marriott Water Street hotel. Beacon offers stunning panoramic views of the city skyline and waterfront, along with a chic and lively atmosphere. The venue’s multiple lounge areas, outdoor terrace, and distinctive bar make it the perfect place to unwind with a cocktail while taking in the breathtaking views of downtown Tampa.

CHILL: Relax and Explore Tampa Bay’s Unique Neighbourhoods

Tampa Bay is not just about high-energy attractions and urban adventures; it also offers plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind. Hyde Park Village is a perfect example of this—a modern oasis nestled within Tampa’s historic Hyde Park neighbourhood. This carefully curated collection of shops, boutiques, and restaurants spans six city blocks and offers a blend of local favorites and top names in fashion and fitness. Whether you’re looking for a unique gift, a stylish outfit, or a place to enjoy a leisurely lunch, Hyde Park Village has something for everyone.

Another highlight of my trip was visiting Water Street Tampa, a burgeoning neighbourhood that represents the future of urban living in Tampa Bay. Supported by significant investment from Bill Gates, Water Street Tampa is transforming the city’s downtown area with new residential, commercial, and public spaces. I toured the area with Preston Rudie of Strategic Property Partners (SPP) and was impressed by the vision and scale of this development. The neighborhood blends modern luxury with thoughtful urban planning, offering residents and visitors a vibrant, walkable community with stunning views of Tampa’s waterfront.

For a unique cultural experience, I visited the J.C. Newman Cigar Company in Ybor City. Founded in 1895, J.C. Newman is the oldest family-owned premium cigar maker in America. The company’s factory, known as “El Reloj,” has been a staple in Tampa’s Cigar City for nearly 70 years. During my visit, I learned about the art of cigar making, including the traditional techniques used by the company’s skilled artisans. The tour was both informative and fun, offering a glimpse into the history and culture that have made Tampa the cigar capital of the world.

STAY: Luxurious Comfort at the Epicurean Hotel

During my stay in Tampa Bay, the Epicurean Hotel was my home base. Located in the Hyde Park historic district of South Tampa, the Epicurean Hotel is the perfect blend of luxury, urban chic, and comfort. This 137-room boutique hotel reflects Tampa’s rich culinary heritage with features like the Epicurean Theatre, a state-of-the-art culinary classroom where guests can enjoy cooking classes and food-related events. The on-site restaurant, Elevage, reimagines classic recipes with a modern twist, while the EDGE Rooftop cocktail lounge offers breathtaking views of the city. After a day of exploring, I relaxed at the Evangeline Spa, which offers a range of treatments designed to soothe the body and mind.

The Epicurean Hotel’s focus on culinary excellence is evident throughout the property, from the Bern’s Fine Wine & Spirits wine shop to the Chill Bros Ice Parlor. This hotel is more than just a place to stay—it’s a destination in itself, offering guests a unique and immersive experience that celebrates the flavors and culture of Tampa Bay. Upon check in, you are greeted with a glass of wine. Red or wine? I prefer to drink a chilled white on a balmy day. The reception area has a lovely wall sconce made up refurbished wine crates that layers the walls and ceiling.
