Schwartz’s Deli Montreal: A Must-Visit

When in Montreal, a visit to Schwartz’s Deli is a must. This iconic spot has been serving up some of the best smoked meat sandwiches for nearly a century and remains a staple for both locals and visitors. Today, I had the pleasure of experiencing this legendary deli firsthand, and I’m here to share why it’s an essential stop for any trip to Montreal.

A Storied History

Schwartz’s Deli is steeped in history. Established in 1928 by Reuben Schwartz, a Jewish immigrant from Romania, the deli has maintained its traditional methods for curing smoked meat for almost a century. Using a 10-day marinating process, their signature meat has a flavor and tenderness that is hard to match. Over the years, Schwartz’s has stayed true to its roots, still serving up the classic dishes that have made it famous.

Ownership of this Montreal institution has changed hands a few times, but the spirit of the deli remains the same. In 2012, Schwartz’s found itself under the care of some notable figures, including Celine Dion and her husband, René Angélil. They became part of the deli’s legacy, ensuring its rich traditions would continue to be a part of Montreal’s vibrant food scene. Despite the changes in ownership, the recipes, quality, and ambiance remain unchanged, keeping it an authentic Montreal experience.

The Experience: A Step Back in Time

I headed there for lunch with two friends—one a Montreal local and the other visiting from South Africa. True to its reputation, a line of about 20 people stretched out the door. But don’t let that deter you; the line moves quickly, and before you know it, you’ll find yourself inside the bustling, narrow deli, where the smell of smoked meat fills the air.

Seating at Schwartz’s is part of the experience. The tables along the left side are designed for six people, so it’s common to share a table with another group. This adds to the fun, creating a lively, communal atmosphere where strangers bond over their shared love of the deli’s offerings.

We ordered the #4 on the menu, a classic smoked meat sandwich served with a large pickle, fries, and coleslaw. The service is quick and efficient; within about 15 minutes of ordering, we were digging into our meals. The sandwich was everything you could hope for: warm, savory, and piled high with perfectly seasoned smoked meat. Schwartz’s keeps things simple, letting the quality of their ingredients speak for themselves.

So, why should you make the trek to Schwartz’s Deli? It’s not just about the food, although that’s reason enough. It’s the experience of stepping into a piece of Montreal’s culinary history, where little has changed in almost 100 years. From the black-and-white photographs lining the walls to the bustling waitstaff who know the menu inside and out, Schwartz’s is a living museum of Montreal’s Jewish food culture. The deli embraces tradition, serving up each meal with the same care and flavour that has made it an institution.

Located at 3895 Boul. St-Laurent, Montréal, QC H2W 1X9, Schwartz’s Deli caters to all types of visitors. Whether you’re lining up for a seat inside, picking up an order through their take-out entrance, or having a smoked meat fix delivered to your door via DoorDash or Skip the Dishes, they’ve got you covered. They even offer catering services and have an online store for those who want to bring a taste of Schwartz’s into their own homes.

Our entire visit, from lining up to paying the bill, took just about an hour, but it was an hour packed with flavor, history, and an unmistakable Montreal vibe. Schwartz’s Deli is more than just a place to grab a bite; it’s a cultural landmark, a living piece of the city’s history that continues to draw people in year after year.

The Leonard Cohen Mural: A Quick Detour

After our hearty meal, we took a short walk around the corner to 3953 St Laurent Blvd, where a stunning mural of Leonard Cohen gazes down upon the street. This mural is a tribute to one of Montreal’s most cherished icons, capturing the heart and spirit of the city. Developed to honor Cohen’s legacy, the mural depicts the singer-songwriter in his signature fedora, his hand resting tenderly on his heart. The artwork is brought to life by Montreal artist Gene Pendon and internationally renowned American street artist El Mac, who based their creation on a photograph taken by Cohen’s daughter, Lorca.

Standing at a towering 21 stories and spanning 10,000 square feet, this breathtaking mural was commissioned by MU, a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the city’s public spaces. When the sun sets, the mural lights up with a soft, warm glow, casting Cohen’s tender gaze across the city streets. A second mural of Cohen called “Tower of Songs” can also be found at 1420 Crescent St, adding yet another layer to Montreal’s vibrant cultural tapestry.
