Nestled in LaVilla, a neighbourhood with deep cultural roots, the Ritz Theatre was originally built in 1929, serving as a movie house and live performance venue during a time when segregation shaped the American South. LaVilla itself has long been a center for African-American art, culture, and business, hosting luminaries like Ray Charles, James Brown, and Ella Fitzgerald during its heyday.
Although the original building was razed, the Ritz Theatre was reimagined and rebuilt in 1999 to celebrate and preserve the vibrant history of LaVilla. Today, the theatre is more than an architectural gem; it’s a cultural cornerstone where past and present converge, offering visitors a chance to explore rich histories and contemporary creativity.
Lift Ev’ry Voice: A Permanent Collection to Remember
The Ritz Theatre Museum’s permanent collection, Lift Ev’ry Voice, connects visitors with Jacksonville’s rich African-American heritage. Through immersive storytelling, the exhibit celebrates remarkable Floridians and their contributions to history and culture. Guests can hear Jacksonville natives James Weldon and John Rosamond Johnson recount how their song Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing became known as the African-American National Anthem.
As visitors explore further, they can immerse themselves in the 1940s nightclub scene of “Harlem of the South,” trace the history of their families or neighbourhoods in society photographs by Ellie Lee Weems, and experience the powerful Civil Rights Movement through a sit-in reenactment at the Woolworths counter. Each installation offers a profound connection to the triumphs and tribulations that shaped Jacksonville and the nation.

One of the highlights of the exhibit is a tribute to Eartha M.M. White, an influential figure in Jacksonville’s history. White’s achievements as an activist and founder of the Clara White Mission—a charitable organization named after her mother—are celebrated here, reflecting her lifelong dedication to community service. Earlier on this trip, I had the privilege of visiting Eartha’s Farm & Market, a farm named in her honour, which continues her legacy of helping others through sustainable agriculture.

Featuring intricate displays and art pieces that celebrate Jacksonville’s African-American heritage, it immerses visitors in an experience that is both educational and emotional. A Personal Journey to the Ritz
My introduction to the Ritz Theatre and Museum came in a rather serendipitous way. While visiting the Museum of Science and Health, I struck up a conversation with the Vice President of Education & Exhibits, Dr. Anthony Mortimer, who recognized my deep interest in history. After sharing some local recommendations, he enthusiastically suggested I visit The Ritz. Intrigued, I made my way there, arriving just 20 minutes before closing. The woman at the museum entrance saw my excitement and graciously allowed me to explore the exhibit, even with limited time. I did my best to take in as much as possible, but I know I need to return to truly absorb every caption and description paired with the photographs and installations. I only wish I had known about it sooner. For future visitors, an hour will suffice to appreciate the displays and the stories they tell.
