Catty Shack Ranch: A Sanctuary for Big Cats

On my recent visit to Jacksonville, Florida, I took a leap and visited Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary—a refuge dedicated to rescuing endangered big cats and exotic animals. While excited, I was a little nervous. I adore animals and share my home with two beloved rescue cats, but I struggle with seeing animals in captivity. My reservations deepened after watching Tiger King, which cast a shadow over sanctuaries lacking formal zoo accreditations. Catty Shack Ranch, however, proved to be different. This 501(c)(3) non-profit is more like a retirement home, a permanent, loving space for exotic animals that need a forever home. Join me on a tour through this sanctuary’s incredible mission, their commitment to care, and the experiences that left me inspired and hopeful.

A Purpose-Driven Sanctuary

Catty Shack Ranch exists to rescue and provide lifetime care for exotic animals in need, particularly big cats that have faced difficult circumstances. Many residents, including tigers, lions, and leopards, were previously neglected or abandoned and found sanctuary here. For these animals, Catty Shack is a safe haven where they can live out their lives in peace. While touring the sanctuary, I met Sally, a dedicated volunteer and retired schoolteacher who loves guiding school groups through the sanctuary. Sally shared how every animal at Catty Shack has a unique story, and she pointed out the facility’s efforts to keep the animals engaged and comfortable. Watching a cougar batting around a toy showed me the sanctuary’s sincere commitment to ensuring that these animals live fulfilling lives.

My worries about the conditions were eased as I explored the sanctuary. I was relieved to see that the Amur tigers have spacious enclosures with cabins on stilts, allowing them to rest in the shade either inside or below the cabin. Or, cool off in their pool complete with a waterfall. I could see they were doing their best with the funds they have, striving to expand the enclosures to enhance the animals’ quality of life. Catty Shack’s staff and volunteers go above and beyond, working with skilled veterinarians who offer their expertise for free. These professionals provide everything from routine check-ups to specialized care, such as stem cell therapy and radiation treatment, all to support the animals’ well-being. I was moved to learn that some veterinarians travel across the country to donate their time and skills to these majestic creatures.

The Heart of the Mission: Rescue, Educate, Protect

Catty Shack Ranch’s mission is clear: to provide a forever home for endangered big cats, educate the public about their plight, and rescue exotic animals in need. As I toured the sanctuary, I could see the tremendous effort put into educating visitors. The tours are designed to highlight each animal’s background, personality, and conservation status, offering an eye-opening experience about the challenges facing big cats both in the wild and in captivity. Curt LoGiudice, Catty Shack’s Executive Director—who lives on the premises—began this mission over 30 years ago. To ensure the sanctuary continues well beyond his lifetime, he established it as a charity with a Board of Directors.
