Chasing Summer: A Year-Long Road Trip Through North America’s Warmest Destinations

I live in Canada and September 23rd will mark the end of summer and welcome in the autumn equinox. I am grateful for all 4 seasons that I am able to experience living in Toronto however, I wouldn’t mind the balmy weather for a little while longer. Imagine a road trip where summer never ends. A journey that takes you across North America, ensuring you bask in warm, sunny weather all year long. From the sun-kissed beaches of Southern California to the lush landscapes of the Carolinas, this road trip is designed to keep the spirit of summer alive no matter the season. Whether you’re an avid road tripper or simply a lover of warm weather, this adventure promises not only sunshine but also a series of unforgettable experiences across diverse landscapes.

Winter: Southern California & Arizona

  • San Diego, CA: Start your journey in sunny San Diego, where the average winter temperatures are in the low 70s. Spend your days exploring the expansive Balboa Park, home to museums, gardens, and the world-renowned San Diego Zoo. Don’t miss a sunset at La Jolla Cove, where the golden light reflects off the ocean, offering breathtaking views. For a touch of adventure, take a day trip to nearby Torrey Pines State Reserve, where you can hike among rugged cliffs and enjoy panoramic ocean views.
  • Sedona, AZ: As you head east, the red rocks of Sedona welcome you with their majestic beauty. Known for its stunning landscapes and spiritual vortexes, Sedona offers a blend of outdoor adventures and wellness retreats. Hike through Oak Creek Canyon or take a jeep tour to explore the off-the-beaten-path red rock formations. The mild winter temperatures make it an ideal time to visit, avoiding the intense summer heat. Don’t forget to spend a night stargazing; Sedona’s dark skies are perfect for spotting constellations.

Spring: Texas Hill Country & the Carolinas

  • Fredericksburg, TX: Spring brings you to the heart of Texas Hill Country, where wildflowers bloom in vibrant colors across the rolling hills. Fredericksburg, with its rich German heritage, offers a unique cultural experience. Visit local vineyards for wine tastings, and explore the charming Main Street filled with boutiques and cafes. If you’re a history buff, the National Museum of the Pacific War provides an in-depth look at World War II in the Pacific. For outdoor enthusiasts, the nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offers opportunities for hiking, kayaking, and taking in stunning views of the lake. Summer temperatures here are pleasantly warm, perfect for exploring the region without the oppressive heat found in other parts of the country.

The crisp autumn air, combined with the vibrant colors of the changing leaves, makes this region a must-visit during fall.   • Gatlinburg, TN: Conclude your journey in Gatlinburg, a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains. Known for its outdoor adventures, Gatlinburg offers hiking, zip-lining, and wildlife viewing. The fall season brings cooler temperatures, ideal for exploring the Smokies without the summer crowds.
