Mid-century magic, Rat Pack legends, and a desert so beautiful it hurts.
California Dreamer

My heart thrives for the West Coast. I lived in Los Angeles in my early 20s, and that love affair never ends—it just grows fonder. But this time, I’m not driving down PCH or along Sunset Boulevard. I’m heading back to the desert, to one of California’s most iconic hideaways: Palm Springs. Specifically, I’m checking into —a hotel that has hosted more legends than the Oscars and oozes old-school Hollywood charm.
Hollywood Time Capsule

Originally opened in 1959, the Riviera is Palm Springs’ answer to Las Vegas glitz and Beverly Hills exclusivity. Think spoke-wheel design (radial elegance!), pools wrapped in palms, and a guest list that includes Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Elvis Presley, and Marilyn Monroe. Rumour has it that Sinatra once chipped a bathroom sink with a flying champagne bottle during a lovers’ quarrel with Ava Gardner—iconic chaos. The resort’s Grand Ballroom and Starlite Lounge still echo with their voices, laughter, and impromptu performances. I’m not just staying at a hotel—I’m part of the story.
Margaritaville Moment

In 2020, the resort rebranded as Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs, part of the Jimmy Buffett-themed hotel chain known for its laid-back tropical vibes. While it brought a kitschy Key West flair to the desert, the match wasn’t exactly made in paradise. Locals and longtime fans of the Riviera’s glamorous roots felt the Margaritaville identity clashed with the hotel’s mid-century mystique. By 2024, following a challenging period shaped by the global COVID-19 pandemic—which had a profound impact on the travel and hospitality industry—the Margaritaville branding was quietly retired. The timing of the rebrand in 2020 coincided with travel shutdowns and operational disruptions, making it difficult for the new identity to gain meaningful traction. Ultimately, the property returned to its iconic Riviera name, honouring its heritage and restoring the retro-modern elegance that defines Palm Springs.
Where Old Glam Meets New Cool

After a recent renovation, the Riviera remains a design-forward escape with plush rooms, bold prints, and retro-modern flair. The colours? Pure mid-century California: coral, mint, turquoise. With nearly 400 guest rooms, spa suites, and pet-friendly options, the resort is equally suited for romantic getaways or solo escapes (with martinis, obviously).
The Spa Life, Reimagined

The on-site Santé Spa is the largest in Palm Springs and a true haven. Think waterfall pools, eucalyptus steam rooms, and massages that turn back time. After a treatment, I’ll float lazily in one of the two pools with a cocktail from the Paradise Bar—or sip something stronger in the Starlite Lounge, just like the Rat Pack used to.
Desert Playground

Palm Springs is more than just a pretty face. Mid-century modern architecture tours are a must, especially during Modernism Week. I’ll spot butterfly roofs, breeze blocks, and some of the city’s most iconic retro homes tucked behind lush hedges and palm-lined streets. For a splash of culture, I’ll check out the Palm Springs Art Museum or the Walk of Stars downtown.
And I won’t miss Joshua Tree National Park—a surreal wonderland of rock formations and twisted trees just an hour away. Whether I’m into photography, hiking, or stargazing, Joshua Tree is pure desert magic.
The Takeaway

Palm Springs might feel like a movie set, and during my stay at the Riviera Resort & Spa, I hope to step into its story. From the glittering past to the sun-drenched present, this desert getaway promises vintage glamour, timeless architecture, and natural wonders I’ve yet to explore. Based on everything I’ve uncovered, I’m ready to soak in the magic and discover what makes this legendary retreat pulse with possibility.
