I found myself in Austin, Texas, during the buzz of SXSW, supporting a couple of exciting projects I was working on. What made the experience even more special was sharing it with some of my dearest friends. Austin, often called the “Live Music Capital of the World,” is a city like no other—a perfect blend of vibrant arts, rich history, and stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re a foodie diving into mouthwatering barbecue, a music lover chasing the next great live set, or an outdoor enthusiast soaking in the sunshine, Austin has something for everyone. With just one day to take in this eclectic city, here’s how you can make it unforgettable.
Morning: Breakfast and Lady Bird Lake
Start your day in Austin with a hearty breakfast at Jo’s Coffee on South Congress Avenue. Famous for its laid-back vibe and iconic “I love you so much” mural, Jo’s offers everything from breakfast tacos to signature coffee drinks like the Iced Turbo.
After breakfast, head to Lady Bird Lake, a tranquil reservoir in the heart of the city. Rent a kayak or paddleboard for a peaceful paddle while soaking in views of the Austin skyline. If you prefer to stay on land, the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail offers a scenic path perfect for a morning walk or jog.
Mid-Morning: South Congress Avenue and Local Shopping
Next, explore South Congress Avenue (SoCo), one of Austin’s most iconic streets. Stroll past quirky boutiques, art galleries, and vintage shops. Stop at Allen’s Boots to marvel at rows of handcrafted cowboy boots, or browse around Monkey See Monkey Do, a novelty shop offering an assortment of toys, gifts, and offbeat items, reflecting the city’s eclectic vibe.
For a snack, grab a refreshing agua fresca or a sweet treat from a local food truck. SoCo is home to an eclectic mix of food vendors, offering everything from churros to gourmet popsicles.
Afternoon: BBQ and Barton Springs
For lunch, dive into Austin’s famous barbecue scene at Franklin Barbecue, known for its melt-in-your-mouth brisket. If you’re short on time and want to skip the line, Terry Black’s BBQ is another excellent option with equally delicious smoked meats.
After lunch, cool off with a visit to Barton Springs Pool, a natural spring-fed swimming pool located in Zilker Park. The crystal-clear water stays at a refreshing 68-70°F year-round, making it a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike. Lounge on the grassy banks or take a refreshing dip to escape the Texas heat.
Late Afternoon: The Texas State Capitol and History
Once you’ve dried off, make your way to the Texas State Capitol, an impressive structure that stands taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Take a free guided tour to learn about Texas history and marvel at the beautiful architecture, including its pink granite façade and ornate interiors.
If history piques your interest, consider visiting the nearby Bullock Texas State History Museum, which delves into the state’s rich heritage through interactive exhibits and artifacts.
Evening: Sunset at Mount Bonnell
For a spectacular view of Austin’s skyline and the Colorado River, head to Mount Bonnell. This popular lookout point offers breathtaking vistas, especially at sunset. A short hike to the top rewards you with panoramic views that capture the beauty of Austin’s natural surroundings.
Dinner: Farm-to-Table Dining
As night falls, indulge in Austin’s farm-to-table culinary scene at Odd Duck. This restaurant serves innovative dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients, offering a true taste of Texas with a creative twist. For a more casual option, try Loro, an Asian smokehouse with delicious brisket, ribs, and shareable plates.
Night: Live Music on Rainey Street
No trip to Austin is complete without experiencing its legendary live music scene. Head to Rainey Street, a charming historic district lined with bungalow-style bars and music venues. Catch a performance at Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden, known for its lively atmosphere and extensive beer selection.
If you’re up for a unique experience, visit The Continental Club on South Congress Avenue. Established in 1955, this iconic venue features a mix of blues, rock, and country music in an intimate setting that captures the spirit of Austin.
Late Night: Sweet Treats and the Bat Bridge
For a late-night treat, stop by Amy’s Ice Creams, an Austin institution known for its creative flavours and playful vibe. Try the Mexican vanilla or experiment with one of their seasonal specials.
Wrap up your day with a visit to the Congress Avenue Bridge, home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. From March to November, you can witness the mesmerizing sight of over a million bats emerging from beneath the bridge at dusk—a quintessential Austin experience.
