A Warm Alaskan Welcome

Fairbanks is a city shaped by resilience, gold, and the great outdoors. Founded in 1901 during Alaska’s gold rush, it quickly became known as the “Golden Heart City”—a nickname that still fits, thanks to the warmth of its people and its role as a gateway to Alaska’s interior. Today, Fairbanks blends history and wilderness: aurora-filled skies in winter, the midnight sun in summer, and a culture deeply tied to both Native Alaskan traditions and frontier spirit.

Over the next week, for the first time, I’ll be exploring this corner of Alaska in depth—from panning for gold and walking with reindeer to soaking in Chena Hot Springs, standing under the Arctic Circle, and experiencing the vast beauty of Denali National Park. Along the way, I’ll also meet local artisans, explore historic museums, and join in the community’s love of art and storytelling. It’s an itinerary that promises both adventure and connection. I hope it inspires you to explore this region.
And it all begins here at Pike’s Waterfront Lodge.
A Lodge with History and Heart

Pike’s is more than a place to sleep—it’s part of Fairbanks’ story. The property’s roots trace back to Pike’s Landing Restaurant, which opened in 1959 as a riverside hub for locals and travellers alike. In 2000, the Binkley family expanded it into the lodge we see today, carefully preserving that blend of rustic Alaskan charm and community spirit. Its riverside setting on the Chena River feels timeless, with a sense of history built into its walls.
Whimsy at Every Turn

My first impression? Pike’s is filled with character and whimsy. It’s not just a hotel, but almost an Alaskan playground for travellers. From aurora conservatories and movie nights to gardens, bocce ball courts, and even a “Lucky Duck Hotel” for resident waterfowl, the lodge invites you to wander, discover, and play. The list of experiences alone—everything from reindeer walks to an aurora greenhouse—reads like a bucket list pinned to the riverside.
The Room with an Aurora View

Tonight, I’m tucked into an Aurora View Room overlooking the Chena River. It’s a thoughtful space designed for travellers who, like me, are chasing both comfort and the possibility of catching the northern lights. Even from the balcony, I can sense the rhythm of the lodge—the water, the boardwalk, and the anticipation of tomorrow’s discoveries.
The Takeaway

Arriving in Alaska can be overwhelming in the best way, but Pike’s Waterfront Lodge makes you feel immediately at home. With its history, its playful spirit, and its riverside setting, it’s the kind of place where “fun happens here” isn’t a slogan—it’s a promise. Tomorrow I’ll step outside and experience everything from the reindeer habitat to the Aurora Discovery Institute. Tonight, I’m letting Fairbanks whisper its first welcome from the banks of the Chena River. From riverside lodges to Arctic skies, there’s so much more to come. Return tomorrow for the next chapter in this Alaskan journey.
