How to Travel with Only a Carry-On: A Step-by-Step Guide

Travelling with only a carry-on might seem challenging, but it’s a smart way to simplify your journey, avoid extra baggage fees, and speed through airports. I recently traveled to NYC for a conference and live by carry-on, period. It’s a fast and efficient way to travel. I’m not one who thinks, “Hmmm, I might wear that, so I’ll bring it.” I think about each day realistically and pack according to that. I travel approximately 50,000 miles a year and can say I have packing down pat! With the right packing strategy, you can easily fit everything you need for a week-long trip into a compact bag. This step-by-step guide will show you how to travel light and smart, ensuring you have all your essentials while keeping your luggage minimal.

All of the items I am recommending I own and use.

1. Choose the Right Carry-On Bag

The foundation of light travel starts with a high-quality, compact carry-on bag. Look for a lightweight, durable option that meets airline size requirements. I recommend the Briggs and Riley Essential 22″ Carry-On Expandable Spinner. What I love about this suitcase is that it has the handle mechanism on the outside, which means it doesn’t take up space inside the case, unlike other suitcases. Plus, it’s expandable, making it ideal for bringing back items collected from conferences or souvenirs. Finally, they offer a lifetime guarantee.

2. Create a Packing List and Stick to It

The key to efficient packing is planning. Before you begin, create a detailed packing list that includes only the essentials. Stick to a minimalist wardrobe by choosing versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. While I don’t personally use the PackPoint app because I travel so much that I’ve got it down pat, there are folks who swear by it, and it is a super helpful tool. I did go through it before writing this blog and downloaded the free version – there’s also a premium version available for just $3.99. I’m heading back to NYC for an event and keyed in the number of nights I’m staying and the purpose of travel, and it shared a list of suggested clothing, jewelry, toiletries, shoes, and so forth. It’s super helpful!

3. Opt for Travel-Sized Toiletries

Toiletries can take up valuable space in your carry-on, but travel-sized versions allow you to pack only what you need. I recommend The Ordinary’s Daily Set – it’s compact, affordable, airport-size approved, and perfect for travel. Plus, at only $27 CDN, it’s a great value. The set includes the Squalane Cleanser (50ml), Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (30ml), and Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA (30ml), providing all the essentials you need without taking up too much space in your bag.

4. Use Packing Cubes for Organization

Packing cubes are a game-changer for travellers looking to maximise space and stay organised. They help you compartmentalize your belongings, allowing you to fit more into your bag while keeping everything accessible. Eagle Creek offers sustainable packing cubes that compress your clothes, making them easier to pack and reducing wrinkles.

5. Wear Your Bulkiest Items on the Plane

To save space in your carry-on, wear your heaviest clothing and shoes during your flight. A jacket or bulky sweater can double as a travel pillow, while wearing your sneakers or boots gives you more room in your bag for smaller items.

Travelling with only a carry-on doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or style. With smart packing techniques, versatile clothing, and the right accessories, you can simplify your travel experience while still having everything you need. Follow this step-by-step guide to make your next trip lighter, faster, and stress-free, proving that less really is more.
