Jacksonville pulses with energy, from its rolling surf to its soulful music. A day spent between the Super Girl Pro Surf Competition and Jacksonville PorchFest was a vibrant dive into two of the city’s signature events. From world-class surfing in the morning to live music in historic neighborhoods and a free evening concert by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, this adventure showcased a powerful celebration of culture and connection. Here’s a look at one unforgettable day, where waves and tunes stole the spotlight.
Morning: Super Girl Pro Surf Competition
The Super Girl Pro isn’t just a surf event—it’s the world’s largest all-female surf competition, where athletes from across the U.S. gather to showcase their skills and strength. Held from November 8–10, 2024, this iconic event drew thousands to Jacksonville Beach, where festival tents bustled with female-led vendors, live classes, speakers, and concerts—all open to the public for free. Watching the athletes carve through the waves with grace and power was exhilarating, underscoring why this competition has become a landmark in the surfing world.
Jacksonville Beach was packed with spectators cheering for the surfers as they tackled the waves, adding a high-energy vibe that only grew throughout the day. Families, surf enthusiasts, and new fans alike were drawn to the competitive spirit and inspiring displays of female strength. Congratulations to Kirra Pinkerton for capturing the win at the competition.
Afternoon: Jacksonville PorchFest
Moving from the beach to Springfield’s historic neighbourhood, Jacksonville PorchFest offered a contrasting yet equally captivating experience. What makes PorchFest extraordinary is its personal connection to Jacksonville’s character. Homeowners open their porches to support local artists, turning the entire neighborhood into a music festival.
People of all ages meandered from porch to porch, savouring the music, sampling the food trucks, and enjoying the lively atmosphere. In the park, the headliner stage and VIP area buzzed with energy, while food and drink stalls kept the crowd refreshed.
A Highlight: The Queens of Tulua Performance
Back row left to right: Lolly Gag, Madam Platinum and Teyonna Lefierce
One of the most talked-about shows was The Queens of Tulua, curated by the charismatic Jordyn Shepherd. Her dazzling lineup featured performers like Alabama’s Miss Rising Star 2021 Lolly Gag, Rico Deelite, Teyonna Lefierce, and Madam Platinum. Jordyn, who is reopening Hamburger Mary’s in Jacksonville this December, captivated the crowd with her commitment to entertainment and advocacy. They each delivered an engaging and vibrant performance that had everyone laughing, dancing, and cheering.
The audience mirrored the diversity of the performers, with families, grandparents, and kids celebrating together. Jordyn’s heartfelt words captured the day’s spirit perfectly: “I’ve been doing this for 25…30 years, and never would I have thought kids would be at one of my shows. This is a great day!”
Evening: Closing Out the Day with Joan Jett and The Black Hearts
Later in the day, I made my way back to the beach for the Super Girl Pro’s free concert featuring Joan Jett and The Black Hearts. Against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, Joan Jett’s legendary rock anthems filled the air, electrifying the crowd and providing the perfect closing act to an action-packed day. Joan Jett was an ideal headliner for this event, embodying the spirit of resilience and breaking barriers. Growing up in a time when rock ‘n’ roll was considered off-limits to girls, Joan smashed through that “boys’ club” as a teenager, paving the way for female rockers everywhere.
From the exhilaration of watching surfers carve through the waves to the charm of porch-side concerts in a historic neighbourhood, this day in Jacksonville was an unforgettable showcase of community, talent, and a vibrant culture. Both the Super Girl Pro Surf Competition and PorchFest reflected the best of the city. Amidst the day’s events, I experienced a microcosm of understanding that felt both inspiring and heartening. While I recognize that not everyone in Jacksonville—or anywhere, for that matter—may fully embrace open-mindedness, witnessing such a spirit of inclusivity and acceptance was a refreshing reminder of the progress that can exist. It felt like a hopeful glimpse into what a more unified community can look like, even in a place with a blend of perspectives. I’ll definitely be back next year, eager to relive this unique fusion of surf, music, and connection. Until then, Jacksonville, thank you for the good time!
