Houston is a sprawling metropolis filled with diverse neighbourhoods, each offering its own distinct energy. But one that stood out to me was 19th Street in The Heights—a nostalgic throwback to an old-town vibe. In the middle of a fast-paced, cosmopolitan city, The Heights feels like a step back in time. I love to wax nostalgic, and it’s fun to experience a small-town atmosphere within a major urban centre.
The History of The Heights

Established in the late 1800s, The Heights was one of Houston’s first planned communities. It was originally designed as a streetcar suburb for affluent residents looking to escape the congestion of downtown. The neighbourhood was carefully laid out with wide streets, charming homes, and a self-sufficient business district. Over the years, it has transformed while maintaining its historic charm. Today, The Heights is known for its preserved architecture, vibrant local businesses, and a strong sense of community.
19th Street: The Heartbeat of The Heights

The Heights’ iconic 19th Street is a bustling strip lined with vintage shops, antique stores, and small businesses that have been around for decades. Walking down this street, you’ll find yourself transported to another era, where mom-and-pop stores still thrive, and customer service feels personal. What truly makes 19th Street special is the people. Many of the businesses here are family-owned and have been passed down for generations. Shopkeepers are passionate about what they do, and their enthusiasm is contagious. Whether you’re hunting for a unique piece of history in an antique store or chatting with a local baker about their latest creation, there’s a warmth and familiarity that sets The Heights apart from other Houston districts.
First Things First

I started my visit, with lunch at Ema (5307 N. Main St.), a Michelin Big Gourmand restaurant known for its contemporary take on Mexican cuisine. From handmade tortillas to flavourful tacos, every bite showcased Houston’s vibrant culinary scene. After lunch, I headed over to 19th street by foot.
Exploring The Heights

I explored the neighbourhood with Coryne Rich, a local who gave me deeper insight into how The Heights has evolved while retaining its unique charm. As we walked, she shared stories about the history of the district, pointing out family-run shops that have stood the test of time and new businesses that seamlessly blend into the area’s nostalgic aesthetic. Walking through its streets, I admired a blend of historic bungalows and newly restored spaces, reflecting the area’s ongoing preservation efforts. The juxtaposition of past and present was striking—one moment, I was admiring a century-old home with a welcoming front porch, and the next, a thoughtfully renovated boutique that embraced the spirit of The Heights while catering to modern tastes.

Here are some of the shops I visited:
- Vinyl Edge Records (239 W 19th St.) – A haven for music lovers, this shop has been selling vinyl records for decades, specializing in rare and hard-to-find releases.
- AG Antiques (313 W 19th St.) – A massive antique mall showcasing curated collections from various eras.
- Jubilee (325 W 19th St.) – A vibrant boutique offering an eclectic mix of unique gifts, fashion, home décor, and locally crafted treasures, all curated with a playful and artistic flair.

I ended my tour at Jeni’s Ice Creams (375 W 19th St.), the perfect spot for a sweet treat and a chance to cool off. The lively atmosphere, with families and friends gathering to enjoy the warm Houston weather, made the experience even more enjoyable.
