DeLand Guide: A Journey Through History, Art, and Nature

FLORIDA SERIES – Third stop!

DeLand, Florida, is a town steeped in history, charm, and natural beauty, founded by New York entrepreneur Henry DeLand in 1876. DeLand had a grand vision of creating an “Athens of Florida,” a place of culture, education, and prosperity. His dream took root with the establishment of Stetson University, Florida’s oldest private college, which continues to be a cornerstone of the community. Today, DeLand is a vibrant town known for its rich history, lively arts scene, and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or simply looking for a unique getaway, DeLand offers something for everyone.

STAY: Comfort and Convenience in DeLand

After a scenic drive from Lakeland, I arrived in DeLand, ready to explore. My home base was the Courtyard by Marriott, a modern hotel that offers both comfort and convenience. Located just a short walk from the heart of DeLand, the Courtyard is ideally situated for exploring the town’s many attractions. The hotel itself is welcoming, with spacious rooms, a relaxing pool, and a well-equipped fitness center—perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration.

After checking in, I took a quick stroll to the nearby Visitor Center to gather some information and plan my stay. The Visitor Center is a great resource for maps, brochures, and tips from locals on the best places to visit, eat, and relax in DeLand. The friendly staff (namely Georgia Turner) helped me with an outlined itinerary that balanced relaxation, culture, and adventure, ensuring I made the most of my time in this charming town.

EAT: Savouring DeLand’s Culinary Delights

DeLand’s food scene is a delightful mix of local flavors and global influences. My first culinary stop was Cress, a local gem that has been a pillar of the DeLand dining scene for over a decade. Known for its commitment to thoughtful sourcing and support of local farmers, Cress offers a menu that reflects the best of what the region has to offer, with inspirations drawn from around the world. Each dish is crafted with care, using fresh, seasonal ingredients that showcase the vibrant flavors of Florida.

The restaurant’s ambiance is warm and inviting, making it the perfect spot for a leisurely dinner. The menu at Cress changes regularly, but you can always expect to find creative dishes that highlight the bounty of the local area. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty entrée or a lighter, vegetable-forward dish, Cress delivers a dining experience that is both satisfying and memorable.

Another culinary highlight of my visit was BakeChop, a scratch kitchen in downtown DeLand.

This cozy eatery is known for its locally sourced, hand-crafted food, and mouthwatering desserts. The menu features a variety of favorites, from burgers and sandwiches to fresh salads and daily specials, all made with high-quality ingredients. The focus on local produce and pasture-raised meats ensures that every meal is not only delicious but also supports the local community. The friendly atmosphere at BakeChop makes it a great place to enjoy a casual meal, and the desserts—made fresh in-house—are the perfect way to end your day.

CHILL: Relax and Reconnect with Nature and History

DeLand is a haven for both nature lovers and history enthusiasts, offering plenty of opportunities to relax and immerse yourself in the town’s rich past. A short drive from the Courtyard by Marriott, DeLeon Springs State Park is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to unwind in a natural setting. The park’s centerpiece is its crystal-clear spring, which has been a source of “healing waters” for centuries, first for the Mayaca Indians and later for visitors from all over the world. The spring’s cool, refreshing waters are perfect for a swim, especially on a warm Florida day.

My visit to DeLeon Springs started with a hearty breakfast at the Old Sugar Mill Pancake House, a beloved spot located in a 100-year-old replica of the original 1830s sugar mill. Here, guests can cook their own pancakes right at the table, adding their choice of toppings from a generous selection. The pancake house also offers a variety of other breakfast options, making it a great way to start your day of exploration.

After breakfast, I joined the Fountain of Youth Eco/Heritage Tour, a 50-minute boat trip that takes you through DeLeon Springs State Park and the nearby Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. The tour is a wonderful way to learn about the area’s rich history and observe local wildlife in their natural habitat. As the boat glided through the waters, our guide shared stories of the Mayaca Indians, early settlers, and the legends surrounding the springs. We spotted ospreys, alligators, and other wildlife along the way, making it a truly memorable experience.

DeLand is also home to the DeLand Historic Mural Walk, a project sponsored in part by the Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, and the State of Florida. This self-guided tour takes you through downtown DeLand, where you can view a series of beautifully painted murals that depict the town’s history, culture, and notable figures. Among the highlights is a mural dedicated to Henry DeLand, the town’s founder, whose vision transformed this small settlement into a thriving community. The murals not only add a vibrant artistic touch to the streets but also serve as a visual narrative of DeLand’s rich heritage.

One of the most beloved murals in DeLand is the angel wings mural, created by local artist Erica Group. Located in the heart of downtown, this mural has become an iconic spot for photos, attracting visitors and locals alike. Interestingly, Group refers to the mural as a “happy accident.” She didn’t initially plan for it to become such a popular attraction, but its simple, uplifting design resonated with the community in a way she hadn’t anticipated. The mural features a pair of angel wings, inviting passersby to stand between them and momentarily transform into an angel, capturing the spirit of DeLand—a town that embraces creativity, history, and a sense of community.

Blue Springs Park

Just a short drive from DeLeon Springs, Blue Spring State Park is another natural gem that should be on your itinerary. The park’s 72-degree waters are a haven for manatees, especially during the winter months when they gather here in large numbers. Blue Spring is one of the best places in Florida to see these gentle giants up close, and the park’s trails offer plenty of opportunities for birdwatching and nature walks. During my visit, I met with Ranger Connor Wagner, who provided fascinating insights into the balance between human activity and the protection of the park’s delicate ecosystems. He emphasized how vital these ecosystems are for all inhabitants—both human and wildlife—and that preserving them requires a careful approach with minimal human interference. The delicate balance of nature here reminds us that low human touch is essential to maintain the pristine conditions that allow these species to thrive.

PLAY: Explore DeLand’s Cultural and Natural Treasures

DeLand is rich in cultural and natural attractions, offering plenty of opportunities for exploration and adventure. One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to the Lyonia Environmental Center, where I learned about Volusia County’s fragile ecosystems. The center features interactive exhibits and hands-on displays that educate visitors about the importance of conservation and the unique flora and fauna of the area. The knowledgeable staff are passionate about their work and eager to share their expertise, making the visit both educational and enjoyable.

In the evening, I headed to Artisan Alley, a vibrant gathering space in downtown DeLand. This historic area is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and a brewery, as well as a relaxing butterfly garden. On Friday evenings, Artisan Alley comes alive with the Farmers and Makers Market, where you can browse a wide selection of local produce, handmade goods, and artisanal products. The market is a great place to experience the local culture and pick up some unique souvenirs.

DeLand is also famous for its street art, including the iconic angel wing murals that have become a popular spot for photos. These murals, along with many others that can be found throughout the downtown area, reflect the town’s vibrant arts scene and add a splash of color to the historic streets. Whether you’re an art lover or simply looking for the perfect Instagram backdrop, DeLand’s murals are a must-see.

A Unique Experience at Barberville Yard Art Emporium

Before leaving DeLand, I made a final stop at the Barberville Yard Art Emporium, located just a short drive from the hotel. This quirky roadside attraction is impossible to miss, with its giant sculptures of giraffes, bears, and other ornamental yard art lining the entrance. Inside, the emporium is a treasure trove of one-of-a-kind items, including Talavera pots, aluminum sculptures, and beautiful Indonesian teak wood pieces. Whether you’re looking for a unique piece of art or just want to browse the eclectic collection, the Barberville Yard Art Emporium is a fun and fascinating place to visit.
